MEET THE CREATORS
The Author: Karen Kaufman Orloff
I have always loved books. I spent many Saturdays at our local library in Orangeburg, NY, where I grew up. I knew I wanted to do something with books as a career, so I got a degree in English/Publishing Studies from Hofstra University, and eventually became a magazine editor. I started freelancing when I left my job to become a stay-at-home mom, and got interested in writing for children. After many years of studying the trade, taking classes, and going to writing groups, I finally got my first book acceptance -- I WANNA IGUANA -- in 2000. The book came out in 2004, and I've been writing children's books ever since!

As a young child I always loved to draw. My first masterpiece, or so my mother’s story goes, was a drawing of a train. At the age of four my medium was a red marker from my art box sketched on my bedding sheets. Instead of napping, I was imagining the train traveling across the landscape of rolling hills and deep valleys of my white blanket. My mother wasn’t incredibly thrilled, but she couldn’t have hung it on the ‘fridge anyway."
